Open Source Scientific Software Initiative

The competition of Riga Technical university’s (RTU) development ideas was launched with the aim of choosing ideas to increase the effectiveness of RTU and involve staff who have proposals to encourage RTU’s development. Six ideas offered by RTU employees were selected in the competition, including the open source scientific software initiative. For the selected open source software tool, a technical platform will be created by using the HPC Center infrastructure.

The idea for the competition was to gradually replace software that requires at least EUR 40 000 each year for Riga Technical university’s (RTU’s) scientific and educational activities with low-cost open source software. This trend is also currently taking place in leading universities around the world.

The project was submitted by Māris Gailis, lecturer at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Transport, and Aeronautics, Artūrs Āboltiņš, leading researcher at the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications, and Lauris Cikovskis, head of the HPC Center.
